Blood pressure is the pressure maintained by the blood in the blood vessels. There are two types of blood pressure. Let’s understand hypertension vs hypotension.
It is the blood pressure in the major arteries of the body during the pumping of blood by the heart to the body. Usually, it is 120 mmHg.
- Diastolic blood pressure:
It is the blood pressure in the major arteries of the body during the “relaxing state” of the heart between pumping. Normally it is 80 mmHg.
What is Hypertension or High blood pressure?
Systolic blood pressure of more than 140 mmHg or Diastolic blood pressure of more than 90 mmHg is High blood pressure or Hypertension. It is the most common cause of Heart failure and Heart attack.
What is Hypotension or Low blood pressure?
Systolic blood pressure of less than 100 mmHg or Diastolic blood pressure of less than 70 mmHg is low blood pressure or Hypotension. It is one of the most common causes of fainting.
Symptoms of high blood pressure or Hypertension:
- Palpitations (feeling of one’s heartbeat).
- Hand tremor ( if severe).
Symptoms of Low blood pressure or Hypotension:
- Cold extremities.
What causes high blood pressure?
There are two types of hypertension:
It is due to some primary defects in the body, e.g. Renal artery stenosis, tumours of adrenal medulla etc.it are present only in 5% of all cases of hypertension.
It is due to the unknown cause, but the most common risk factors are obesity and diabetes. It is present in 95% of all patients of hypertension.
What causes low blood pressure?
Low blood pressure or Hypotension is a temporary condition most of the times and most commonly due to fluid loss from the body.
- 3rd-degree burn.
- Septic and Anaphylactic shock.
- Neurogenic shock.
Hypertension Vs Hypotension – Which Is Worse and how?
Hypotension considered to be worse than Hypertension because blood pressure less than 60 mmHg will not reach your organs for oxygen supply. – Hypertension Vs Hypotension.
There are many treatments of high blood pressure, but one should go for a healthy lifestyle first rather than medications. A 30-minute exercise at least four times a week can help reducing blood pressure. For hypotension, try to refill your fluid loss, e.g. ORS, Normal Saline, etc.
One should measure his blood pressure at least three times a week of diagnosed Hypertension. Lifestyle changes are the most effective way of controlling and preventing Hypertension.
