How is stomach ulcer treated? – Before we need to know about Ulcer, It’s types, symptoms and causes. An ulcer is damage to the particular layer that causes loss of functions of that specific organ. Peptic Ulcers are the Ulcers in Stomach that causes Mucous membrane to slough off.
What is the difference between Ulcer and Erosion?
The Ulcer is a deep laceration pr sloughing off the membrane till Muscular membrane, but Erosion is not deep and only lacerates mucous membrane. There is two most common type of ulcers in GIT.
- Types of ulcers stomach Ulcer (75%).
- Duodenal Ulcer (25%)
What are the symptoms of Ulcer and how to differentiate between Stomach and Duodenal Ulcers?
The first and most common symptom of Ulcer is ‘Pain’ and then burning and heaviness in the upper abdomen or down the throat. You can differentiate between Stomach ulcer and duodenal Ulcer by the time of pain, i.e.
Stomach Ulcer hurts more after eating food. Still, on the other hand, Duodenal Ulcers tend to be the painless or decreasing intensity of pain after eating food.
So time of pain or burning can tell what type of Ulcer we are dealing with. Sometimes Ulcers tend to be so severe that they damage the artery of the stomach and causes bleeding, and thus patients may present with ‘Haematemesis,’ i.e. Blood in vomiting.
Let’ Summarize all symptoms of Peptic Ulcer.
- Pain-related to food.
- Burning in the upper abdomen or lower throat.
- Heaviness in the abdomen.
- Pale skin.
What causes an Ulcer?
There is a lot of Acid in our Stomach, and our Stomach maintains its integrity by strong protection by Mucous membrane which protects against Acid.
Whenever the Acid increases or mucous ( Protection) Layer decrease that will cause Acid to damage the stomach wall and causes ‘Ulcer’. These are the most common causes of peptic Ulcer.
- Helicobacter pylori.
- Zollinger Ellison Syndrome.
H Pylori is the most common bacteria causing 90% of the Stomach Ulcers and 60% of the Duodenal Ulcers. Its Pathology involves Urease enzyme.
Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID’s) are the second most common cause of ulcers. These drugs are used in daily life mostly for pain-relieving purpose and also in reducing inflammation.
They acts on Prostaglandins and increase acid secretion. There is a genetic disease called Zollinger Ellison syndrome that causes a lot of ulcers mostly in Duodenal area.
How can we treat Peptic Ulcers?
