Ever since we evolve into complex organisms, we are discovering more and more about the human being, and every day we are digging deeper and deeper and yet not even close to understanding the Human physiology incredibly Nervous Physiology fully.
Today we are going to talk about a disease that is not new but recently many new things have known for that disease and that disease is “Bipolar Depression“. Almost every one of us heard about Depression but how it is differentiated from Bipolar Depression?
How can we know if we have bipolar Depression?
Is there any treatment available?
Let’s talk about it one by one, Bipolar depression:
Bipolar means two poles or two extremes of a stick when a person is bipolar than he can have double personalities like one time he is delighted and excited and most of the patients suffer from grandiosity like he might think he is the president of the USA and the next moment he is sad and depressed.
Time difference between these two extremes could be days, weeks or even months.
You might have an Uncle or old friend who at some instances behaves very depressed, and after some weeks or months, he told you he is the New Mayor of the city, and everyone should follow his orders.
This psychological diseases happen due to abnormally decrease and increase of particular chemicals in the brain called ‘Neurotransmitter’.
The very first step towards treatment is Diagnosis, without correct Diagnosis, we can not treat any diseases.
So how can we diagnose Bipolar depression?
As I told you in the start, we are learning new things about Nervous physiology daily. Still, we are not that much advanced to diagnose these Psychological disorders with some machine, so this disease can only be diagnosed by history and symptoms of the patient by your physician.
Patient should have these symptoms for at least two years, i.e. alternating episodes of depression and excitement going on for two years.
Note: there will be some average time between these episodes like one month he is depressed another two months he is regular and next month he is Grandiosed and then expected, and the cycle goes on.
- Behavioural therapy.
- SSRI’s (e.g. Fluoxetine).
- Electroconvulsive therapy ( for very severe depression).
As mentioned above, behavioral therapy should be the first option with Lithium as a first-line treatment.
Areas with less Lithium in the water tend to have more cases of Bipolar diseases. In the end, remember, having a condition is not bad, but not to get treatment might be worse!
